This tried and tested pattern is the first choice when darker mayfly duns are sitting on the waters surface having just emerged. Also good on last light as a last resort when fish are rising but you cannot see too well. I also like them during periods of high glare when clouds are overhead as the dark colour helps them stand out from the reflective surface.
