The Ovens river is snow fed.  The headwaters are small pools and riffles while the middle reaches have long glide pools and short riffles. Fishes best in spring and summer.

This wonderful Ovens river flows from the back of Mount Hotham Ski Field. The flow is fast round Harrietville with pools developing further down the valley towards Bright and Porepunkah.   I did notice a Brown Brothers sign on the way here - don't get me started on this trail again.

Spring fishing seems always to start with a nymph indicator because the fast runoff keeps the fish down deep feeding on the early nymph hatches after a winter of little food.    A Tungsten Bead Head Pheasant Tail the choice, or possibly a Black Copper John both in size #18.   Long dropper a must.

If the water is coloured try a Wooly Bugger.   Some caddis and small mayfly in the slower pools may bring trout to the surface.

  • Best Practice Tip:    Fish near the town with the funny name Porepunka.
