My Name is Adams
To be precise Charles Adams and the Adams fly pattern was named after me. The flytier/publican/fishing guide Leonard Halladay tied the original for me some time round 1922, some friends think it was 1930, in the state of Michigan USA, it caught a lot of trout. Time flies and I am not around any more and here David takes up the story of my fly
The Adams.
The order I received just a few days ago 1st November 2025 from Fiona got me thinking and curious as she ordered a few of each of the Adams patterns theflyshopaustralia carries. A bit of research required hence the above paragraph. Here is the list and they are not all called Adams .
• Adams A close copy of the original
• Irresistable Adams High floating due to the Deer hair body
• Adams Parachute A newer way to tie hackles easy to see white post
• Hi Vis Adams Very easy to see in rough water
• Grey Wulff Even the legendary Lee Wulff liked the look of the original
• Dugan Dun Grey Tassie version
• Bushy Emerger Grey Parachute Kaj Bucsh Aussie version
• Custom Bushy Emerger Grey Parachute my adaption to Kaj Bucsh's is the post
I may be stepping into muddy water at this point as the early stage of it long life the Michigan fishers figured it to be a mayfly or a Caddis or an attractor so covering all bets. Good idea but books and papers on Entomology tell us it's a Mayfly. A grey bodied Mayfly Dun Emerger and it crops up in most trout river and streams round the world. As you well know I am a big fan of duns and if you have been guided by me you must have fished a dun at some stage of the day. A Bushy Emerger Grey parachute size #16 would be my bet.
Guides life is over and the Custom Bushy Emerger Grey parachute is my subtile change in searching for the perfect Adams.
David's Tip Parachutes ride low in the water and show the duns body colour better.
