Summer fishing on small rivers

The Summer fishing prior to Christmas on the small rivers in Victoria was below average with high or dirty water being the major problem.   I have been fishing the Delatite River more recently over the last few years and it's having a bit of come back.  A couple of days prior the fish were taking Green Hoppers and as this was the first rising fish I had spotted I tried it.   No luck Hummmm? what next .  A few Caddis around  so a Yellow Sally.  No responce Hummm?  A soft push rise was the giveaway  Spent Spinner #16 or #18 went with #16.   Fish on and landed.  Nice Brown 3lb .  Moral of the the story if the fish keeps rising try a different fly.
