Tungsten Rare Metal
Tungsten is mined round the world. The biggest producer being China where not a lot of coal is produced but plenty of other rare earth minerals are found. Other countries mining this rare metal are Vietnam, Russia , North Korea, Bolivia, Spain, Rwanda, Austria and Australia. We have upped our production by 300% and are ninth in the world and moving up.
Rare unfortunately in this day and age makes it expensive. Adding to this, you guest it, the current term "Global Supply Chain"pushes the price even higher. What's this got to do with us fly fishers you may ask?
We sell rare earth mineral flies . They are called Copper Johns. Well that's Copper not Tungsten good point but the bead is solid Tungsten and the coloured copper wire is wrapped round the the hook shank hence the name Black Tungsten Copper John Red.
The big deal that I failed to mention is Tungsten is one of the heaviest metals on earth, add the hook and the Tungsten bead and the Copper wire we now have the fastest sinking nymph on earth. Now that's rare.
The reason for this story is we catch a lot of trout on Copper Johns especially on the red one. The beads come in three colours, gold, black and red - take your pick.
Tip : Use Fluorocarbon tippet as it sinks faster than nylon tippet material and any aid to get the fly near the river bottom faster lets you catch more fish.
