The King River has two reaches, one above Lake William Hovell and the other below Lake William Hovell.   The upper reaches are forested while the lower runs through vineyards.

The King River is off the radar, that is, unless you are a red wine drinking fly fisher.  If you are there may be quite a few trips in Spring, Summer and Autumn.   Should I try the Baileys 1920s Block Shiraz or maybe the Brown Brother's Limited Release Durif 2021 "if you get my drag free drift"!

Now to the fishing.  The upper reaches above Lake William Hovell can be fast and furious at this time.  The small lake itself can be fished even if high. Brown trout and rainbow are to be found.

What was the name of the red again?

Down the King River valley a few kilometres  below the dam the river has good structured pools and riffles.   Mayfly and caddis are about, size #14 and #16.   Attractor flies work well at this stage of the season and if the water has a bit of colour try the Wooly Bugger.

  • Best Practice Tip:   Have another red!  Yes, don't mind if I do.
