Well you can bet the Tumut in Summer will be swollen and bank to bank.  Air conditioners and irrigators want the water. Talking with hydro people an interesting fact came out. The power demand kicks in big time about 6pm The bosses power bill goes down when he turns his air con off and you go home and turn yours on.  There are more of you than bosses!

Bloody tailraces it is still cold water and the air temperature is 37º.    Its pretty hard to beat a hopper plopped along a high bank and trout usually back this up. Up they come from the depths, wide open mouths crunching your fly.   This must be heaven, no its a bloody tailrace.

The bubble lines along the high banks in late afternoon hold grey dun hatches, size #16.  What trout can refuse clusters of 40-50 duns close to a wall.   Here comes the snout gain.  Other terrestrials are doing their thing including the flying black termite. They come from the forest and across the valley in the thousands fluttering onto the water surface. Nothing brings trout to the surface faster than termites.  With a termite hatch you realise just how many fish are in this river.

  • Best Practice Tip:   Termite wings are very big however the body is very small, #16, #18 and #20.
