The Acheron is an often overlooked trout river. The tea coloured water holds good sized trout over its entire length and can be outstanding during the grass hopper season.
The great fishing days of summer are now fading. The chill of autumn on the Acheron with light frosts and the early morning fog is settling in the small valleys.
The insect world is starting to shut down. Less sunlight making less algae means smaller nymphs. Hook sizes #18 and #20 are now matching the hatch. This is a time where small is good. Tiny Blue Wing Olives #18,#20 and #22 are now spotted drifting down the bubble line during the middle of the day. Fine tippet is required to thread these tiny flies. The river is low as winter rains have not arrived. Long leaders are a must as the trout are spooky in the shallow water. Good casting is not good enough. Great casting is required. It's called technical fishing. Have fun.
- Best Practice Tip: Don't start fishing in the early morning. It's old school gentleman hours: 10am-4pm.
