With the flow of the Big river dropping, things get a little easier with fish becoming aware of the increasing number of dry flies drifting down the river.

Most flies on the river are terrestrials due to the nature of the valley. It is very tight and has heavily timbered banks. No farms here, it's all State Forrest. The pools in some parts are large. It also has deep fast flowing runs and not many riffles. River stones and cross cut reefs can make for difficult wading.

Early Summer flies: beetle patterns work well, Red Tag, Royal Humpy and best of all Dr. Wark.

Other terrestrials, cicadas and termite ants and of course the old faithful Seaducer all catch fish.

Hatch flies - snowflake caddis and a few mayflies- make up the rest of the food chain.

There seem to be a big or medium black flies in the Autumn packs.    Black crickets could be the reason.

  • Best Practice Tip:  Don't wade if you can't see the bottom.
