Fishing in Autumn is technical. In a bloody tailrace it is even more technical.
The flow of the river is now low again. The Goulburn long flat glides and the slow moving water creates bubble lines to die for.
Frost and fog are common and gentleman hours are here again - 10-4pm.
Flies are small, hook size #16,#18,#20 and #22 are the order of the day. Now lets get technical. 15 foot leaders, 2 foot tippet and 3-5lb breaking strain. Bloody tailrace.
Autumn flies are all small caused by lack of food for the nymphs. Less sunlight leads to less algae growth and therefore less nymph food. The tiny Blue Wing Olive Mayflies abound in the cold condition of water and air. Tiny Back Caddis skid along the water surface, size #18 grey duns pop up through the day and midge scurry about as usual.
Some of the larger fish have already left the scene to find spawning sits while others are just sulky. Bloody tailrace.
- Best Practice Tip: Try wading slowly so you do not push waves up the pool. Waves spook fish.
