The Jamieson River is a headwater mountain river which can produce large fish as it feeds into Lake Eildon.
At this time the river has dropped to lower levels and the hatches are starting to build in numbers. Mayfly and Caddis and even a few Stonefly will be fluttering about.
Caddis pupa are on the drift and hatching through the day keeping the fish hunting the surface water.
Fishing an indicator nymph rig with a stimulator or large dun may well grab the trouts attention.
You must be ready for anything any time.
Turning our attention to the river bottom, stick caddis and mayfly nymphs are actively moving round with some swimming to the surface to hatch.
Wade in and pick up a rock. What colour are the nymphs? Dark brown, black, dark grey. The only bright spots are the bright green caddis pupa drifting in the mid water. It pays to keep an eye on the surface as there may well be early season small green hoppers, small bush cicada and ants.
