The Jamieson is a mid sized river, as are most of the rivers coming out of the Great Divide. They all fish well in the months leading up to Christmas.
To get the feeling to whats going on a nymph under a well chosen attractor fly is a good way to start. Keep the dropper long as you want the nymph to now and again clip the rocks on the bottom. The easy reaches round Jamieson produce fish if you use match the hatch flies. As you move upstream into the forested areas terrestrials are the go. Hopper, beetle, ant and cicada patterns - in fact, any attractor pattern will work.
Remember if you are not hooking fish change the fly. Some of the lake fish stay for the Summer, so if you see a large fish rising you might be looking at a 3-5lb trout - brown or rainbow. The river fishes alright after Christmas, but by February it becomes too warm. If its 20º you have a problem.
- Best Practice Tip: Carry a thermometer.
