As its a bloody tailrace its still all about water temperatures. Snow melt from the back of Mt. Kosciuszko flowing into the Upper Swampy River and then into the pondage, plus the snow melt from the Gehi Dam  goes through pipes into the power station and then into the pondage.

From there the very cold water flows through the dam and into the river. Mayfly love cold water. This is why the Swampy Plains river has many species of mayfly which makes for a large colour range of nymphs.

Any big attractor for the indicator fly will do. Don't waste your time with nymphs with non-tungsten bead heads. Keep droppers long for both low or high river levels. The trout in this river hit the big indicator flies well.

Having fished this river for more than 30 years its constant massive caddis hatches shows that the fluctuating levels in search for the mighty dollar does not bother them.   Caddis pupa fishing can be great any day provided the correct size is presented.
