I tend to think of Autumn as the last hurrah from a trouts point of view. The last few hot Summer months, when the warm water has slowed the feeding activity of trout right down, are gone. Now is the time for the fish to get weight back on before Winter and the rigours of spawning arrives.
However there is a problem, natures insect world is not on the same page. Autumn is the start of the shut down for bugs, both aquatic and land based. There are still small hatchs of Blue Wing Olives and Caddis in sizes #18, #20 and #22. The low water in this style of river and the nature of the pools requires long leaders.
- Best Practise Tip: A 15ft leader rolls out like a 12ft leader, plus 2ft of tippet = 17ft. Bloody Hell.
