The Swampy Plains river below Khancoban Dam (pondage) is a 12km tailrace which runs into the Murray River. Yep, another bloody tailrace. The saying, 'up and down like a brides nighty' comes to mind. Sadly this river has gone downhill in the last 10 years. Corporate greed now drives the daily flow rate. Its about electricity.
The shame is years back it produced 4lb fish like no other river in the country. What to do in Spring. Stream flies, Wooly Bugger, Minnow and Antchovy all work well. There are plenty of nymphs patterns work on the river and in particular the underrated Tungsten Bead Head Green Drake. It's a winner in sizes #10, #12 and #14. This fly is hardly used on other rivers but represents the Kossie Dun the large mayfly of the area. Named after Mt. Kosciuszko. This mountain can be seen at certain points when looking upstream. A nymph/indicator rig works best on this bloody tailrace.
