Each Southland river is unique. The reason the number of nymph patterns and quantities vary is not knowing if you are driven by a low number pack.
If this is so, you are a casual fisher. Six or more if you are serious.
All the trout on the South Island fight hard and get down and dirty very quickly. Waikaia nymph feeders are no different. The Waikaia rises in the Umbrella Mountain range and runs due south to join the Mataura not far from Gore. The nymph fishing is just as testing as the dry fly stuff.
As you can see by the hook sizes there are no big bomb nymphs here. Very few plunge pools here means droppers, whatever style -fluff or fur and feather - are not too long. 1 metre would do the trick. Be like all the good local nymph fishers and change the fly if it is not working.
- Best Practice Tip: Keep the nymphs small.
